Work Samples

Thank you for taking a moment to review some examples of my work! I am a training and development professional specializing in taking highly technical information and making it easily accessible. Below are snapshots of some of my instructional design work.

Course: Small Cell Concepts

Tools Used: Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Audition, Articulate Rise

Course for Network Engineers

Ask: In 2021, the client needed a new e-learning course that presented the latest in small cell technology. An earlier course had introduced small cells, but it had become obsolete; however, small cells and their various sub-categories, including distributed antennas systems (DAS) were still very much in use by the client.

Training Plan: I created a draft outline of subject matter that would likely need to be covered. Then I searched for subject matter experts to vet my initial outlines and help me groom it into a course that would meet the needs of the specific target learning audiences.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I created graphics that allowed learners to visualize the concepts of how small cells are used to enhance existing traditional macro cellular coverage, including DAS, heterogenous networks (HetNet), and powering small cells. I also created a video in Premiere Pro to further demonstrate a hypothetical HetNet ecosystem.

Deliverables: I authored the final course in Articulate Rise for maximum compatibility between desktop and mobile platforms.

Course: Wi-Fi Fundamentals

Tools Used: Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Audition, Articulate Storyline

Course for Network Engineers

Ask: In 2023, the Network Engineering groups needed training on the fundamentals of Wi-Fi. The client requestor had purchased Wi-Fi training from a third-party, but then decided they wanted one produced in-house that was more precisely tailored to their needs.

Training Plan: I performed most of my research on Wi-Fi on publicly-available resources on the Internet. I also worked very closely with the company's primary Wi-Fi subject matter expert to sort through the more difficult and nuanced technical details. The result was a new e-learning course that introduced the basic concepts of Wi-Fi to the cellular engineers. It was more efficient training than that purchased from the vendor since it took into consideration radio frequency (RF) knowledge the target audience already had.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I created graphics that allowed learners to visualize the concepts of frequency and channel management. I also created my Illustrator files so that they could be imported directly into Adobe After Effects so that some of the more complex channel management concepts could be animated into instructional videos.

Deliverables: I authored the final course in Articulate Storyline to give me a wider variety of interactivity for better learner engagement.

New Hire Curriculum: Cockeye BBQ Front-of-House

Tools Used: Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Google Forms

Freelance Instructional Design Service

Ask: In 2022, the owners of a successful and growing Northeast Ohio restaurant needed to standardize their training as they were considering opening additional locations. They had been using on-the-job training to on-board all new hires. Training would be needed for front-of-house (FOH) and food preparation job titles. It was agreed that FOH cashier would be the initial training program created, as it’s the highest turnover position.

Outline: First, I set up a Google account for the client, and in that created I started a Google Sheets document where they could supply information to me about their needs.

Training Plan: Next, I took PTO and drove to Ohio and spent a four-day weekend at the restaurant observing; taking notes; interviewing owners, managers, and crew members; and recording video footage to be used in the creation of a series of training videos.

Storyboard: Upon my return form Ohio, I began the design and development phase. For this, I reviewed all the videos, and turned them into storyboards that I e-mailed to the client for review and approval.

Deliverables: I created a total of 14 videos for the entire FOH new hire program. On Day 1 of employment, new hires are to watch them so they can conceptualize their daily tasks, before being put under the mentorship of a seasoned employee.

Here are a couple samples from the curriculum:

I also took their old paper-based FOH menu test and recreated it in Google Forms as an online test that is automatically graded. This allows the employee to take the test at a computer workstation when they are ready and frees the owners and managers from the task of manual grading.

Job Aid: Square Point-of-Sale

Tools Used: Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop

Volunteered Instructional Design Service

Ask: In 2018 a local festival needed a simple step-by-step guide for processing payments using the Square* Point-of-Sale (POS) application. This was for a target audience of volunteers who would not have the benefit of prior training, nor were they likely to have any prior experience with square when they showed up for their two-hour volunteer shifts.

Training Plan: After reviewing the process steps, we agreed that each location within the festival that used square, which included merchandise sales, beverage sales, and festival admissions, would need to have an on-site job aid which demonstrated the clear step-by-step process, with visuals, that any volunteer could refer to and quickly train themselves. As there are a significant number of steps, we decided to produce this job aid on an 11” x 17” laminated card stock.

For content, I gained access to the Square application and a card reader and collected screen shots of and notes about the process, starting from launching the application, to completing the payment process.

Deliverables: Since these job aids were launched, they have been in use for four years. This durability has been because the application has not changed significantly and because they were produced on laminated card stock. This is a cost reduction for the festival.

Training Video: Food Voucher Scrip Processing

Tools Used: Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Adobe Photoshop

Volunteered Instructional Design Service

Ask: In 2019 a local music and arts festival needed a different method to explain the process for accepting and processing food voucher tickets (scrip) from festival staff and performers. One of the challenges the food vendor coordinator had faced was that the vendors didn’t always fully visualize the end-to-end process from her instructional e-mails, resulting in errors in scrip handling and inundating staff with questions during the festival.

Outline: The key training items included: Who will pay by scrip, scrip monetary value, setting up express lines for staff and performers, how to submit scrips for reimbursement, and when reimbursements should be expected.

Training Plan: We agreed that the best solution would be a training video that would accompany the e-mail the food vendor coordinator sent out to the food vendors the week prior to the festival. This would address multiple learning styles.

Storyboard Highlights: Material for this project’s storyboard came from interviewing the food vendor coordinator and reviewing past communications she had sent out to the vendors. I also collected images and logos, process documents, and B-roll and photos of the vendors in action.

Deliverable: I chose to start the video with eye-catching visuals and audio to grab attention. I also created animations and illustrations and shot demonstration videos of key processes. This video is updated every year to reflect any adjustments to the process. This example is the 2023 version.
